What to eat after wisdom teeth removal

If you’ve recently had your wisdom teeth removed, it’s likely that you are experiencing some pain and swelling.

The thought of a chewy meal might make you wince, but the good news is that there are a number of healthy (and tasty) foods that are easy to chew and swallow.

While you are recovering from the procedure, make sure that you stick to soft foods that are easy to chew. You might find it difficult to open your mouth properly for up to a week following your wisdom teeth removal. While you may be tempted to indulge in ice cream and pudding during this time, it’s important to try and incorporate foods that will keep your body nourished and adequately fuelled. Choosing wholesome foods will aid the recovery process and help to minimise inflammation.

Minimise discomfort without compromising your nutrition with these ideas…

  • Soups
Soups made from healthy ingredients, like pumpkin, tomatoes, leeks, and peas, are a great option if you’re looking for a nourishing meal while you recover from your procedure. Because of the texture, soup is easy to eat and if you make it smooth enough you won’t need to chew, which helps to minimise jaw movement. Plus, soups are usually a good source of vitamins and minerals and will keep you hydrated while you rest. Be careful not to eat your soup while it is too hot, as high temperatures could cause you some irritation and discomfort.
  • Scrambled eggs
If you’re experiencing pain, discomfort and swelling, and need something that’s easy to chew, try and snack on some scrambled eggs. When scrambled, the texture of eggs is soft and easy to swallow. They’re also a wholesome food rich in protein, omega-3 fats, vitamins and minerals. For something different, mash some boiled eggs up with mayonnaise.
  • Yoghurt
High in protein and calcium, yoghurt makes a nutritious snack. Choose a smooth option and eat it cold to soothe your mouth. Opt for a plain, sugar-free yoghurt for the ultimate healthy snack.
  • Smoothies
Smoothies are also a great option when you can’t handle a solid meal because you can make them yourself and pack them with all your favourite ingredients. Pop in fruits and vegetables, as well as some yoghurt, to really maximise your intake of nutrients.
  • Mashed vegetables
There are a number of vegetables that can be enjoyed as a mash after your procedure. Potatoes make a tasty option. They are rich in energy and vitamins, they are a good choice for when you need to up your nutrient intake with minimal chewing. Mashed pumpkin or squash also makes a good meal, and is packed with goodness, like potassium, vitamins and minerals.
  • Mashed or puréed fruits
If you’re in the mood for something sweet, applesauce makes a good alternative to whole fruits. While it contains vitamin C and is an easy-to-eat option while your mouth heals, do bear in mind that applesauce is not as nutritious as a raw apple, so go back to whole fruits when you have recovered. Another option is to mash up some bananas — they are easy to chew and are packed with vitamins and minerals like potassium and folate.
  • Oats
Oats are a healthy meal at the best of times, and are a good, filling option. Remember though, that they do have a bit of chewy texture so wait until your mouth feels well enough before you tuck in. Eat your bowl of oats only when it has cooled down, and for a smoother type, opt for instant oats.
